What is Palaeoflora ?
Palaeoflora provides information on Cenozoic plant taxa (macro and micro), corresponding Nearest Living Relatives (NLRs), and their climatic requirements. The NLR concept proposed in the Palaeoflora refers to published palaeobotanical literature resouces and kind advice of our colleagues (see also "data contributors") All climatic ranges for extant plant taxa cited in the Palaeoflora Database are based on records of meteorological stations located within the plant distribution area of the respective taxon and refer to a world-wide context. In order to avoid bias introduced by specific microclimates high altitudinal stations usually are not considered. Palaeoflora climate data are most suitable to reconstruct past regional climates and thus are preferably used for palaeoclimate reconstructions from the palaeobotanical record using the Coexistence Approach (CA, Mosbrugger and Utescher, 1997; Utescher et al., 2014). For a short course on the application of the method see NECLIME web pages. Please note that the selection of meteorological stations within the plant distribution area may not catch the very extremes the plant can tolerate. Given the low probability to record a plant fossil at the distribution limit of the parent plant, the effect on the accuracy of the reconstruction is considered very minor in general. Nevertheless, it can be useful to check for a potential coexistence of taxa in modern plant associations if nearly ovelapping climate intervals are obtained in CA analysis.
What is published in the Net ?
The Internet version of Palaeoflora provides information on Nearest Living Relatives of fossil plant taxa and climatic requirements regarding mean annual temperature (MAT). To access the data got to"QUERY DATABASE". Data for additional variables are provided on demand and are usually shared in the frame of cooperative studies. (please contact Palaeoflora for more details).
How to login
Go to "QUERY DATABASE" and register.
How to use data published in Palaeoflora
Palaeoflora is maintained in the frame of NECLIME (Neogene Climate evolution in Eurasia) and its working groups. You can download additional materials and reports on work in progress on the NECLIME homepage (go to groups)
Please contact PALAEOFLORA if you find any data needing updating or correction. Please note that unauthorized copies of Palaeoflora contents provided elsewhere in the WEB may contain errors or may be oudated.
